Badik
Short stabbing knives known as badik were very popular in Sumatra especially in the Aceh Sultanate where they were true works of art. This magnificent piece consists of a large tapered handle created by layering ivory and black water buffalo horn. Two eye-like copper plugs surrounded by a painted cinnabar red pattern resembling the rays of the sun can be seen on either side. The base of the handle is also of carved ivory partially clad in gold repoussé in a sawtooth pattern cutout.
The wooden sheath is clad in gold and silver repoussé plates worked with a meandering foliage and tendril pattern. The tapered iron blade is curved.
